THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK. FAKE EMAILS THAT LOOK REAL POPPING UP IN INBOXES ALL OVER THE AREA. GOOD EVENING, I’M KRISTINE JOHNSON. WELCOME BACK. I’M MAURICE DuBOIS. A WARNING FOR ONLINE SHOPPERS TONIGHT. A NEW SCAM THAT COULD STEAL YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION IN JUST A MATTER OF SECONDS. HAZEL SANCHEZ REPORTS. Reporter: IT IS ALMOST THE SEASON TO BE IN THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT WHICH ALSO MEANS HOLIDAY SCAMS. YOU HAVE TO PROTECT YOURSELF. Reporter: THAT’S NOT ALWAYS EASY WHEN THE SCAM DOESN’T LOOK LIKE ONE. THIS EMAIL WHICH APPEARS TO BE FROM IKEA IS CIRCULATING NOW. THE SUBJECT LINE, THANK YOU FOR YOUR ORDER. WE SHOWED THE EMAIL TO PEOPLE ON THE STREET WHICH SAYS, YOUR ORDER IS NOW BEING PROCESSED. AND IT INCLUDES A LINK TO THE RECEIPT. IT HAS AN INVOICE NUMBER. YES. I WOULD TEND TO THINK THAT’S LEGITIMATE. Reporter: BUT THIS EMAIL IS FAKE. OH, THAT’S CRAZY. I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT IT WAS REAL. Reporter: IT’S CALLED PHISHING. A SCAM TO LURE USERS INTO CLICKING ON A DECEIVING LINK GIVING THE SCAMMER ACCESS TO PERSONAL INFORMATION LIKE PASSWORDS OR CREDIT CARD NUMBERS. IT’S PERSONALIZED BECAUSE THEY HAVE YOUR INFORMATION. I WOULD THINK IT’S SPAM. WHY ARE THEY CONTACTING ME? YOU KNOW, I ALREADY RECEIVED MY CONFIRMATION. Reporter: CLAIRE FROM THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU SAYS THIS SCAM IS AMONG MANY SHE EXPECTS TO BE LANDING IN EMAIL INBOX OR EVEN PHONE TEXT DURING THE HOLIDAYS AS CONSUMERS MAKE ONLINE PURCHASES. USE LOGIC. DON’T REACT. BECAUSE THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT THE SCAMMERS WANT YOU TO DO. THEY ARE COUNTING ON YOUR CURIOSITY. THEY ARE COUNTING ON THE FEAR FACTOR LIKE, OH, NO, WHAT HAPPENED TO MY ORDER? Reporter: SO THE BEST ADVICE AS YOU RUSH THROUGH THE HOLIDAY SEASON, SLOW DOWN AND CHECK OUT THOSE PHISHY EMAILS. CHANCES ARE THEY’RE PHISHING. HAZEL SANCHEZ, CBS2 NEWS.
